Sip Snapshot from Belford & Co

Bruichladdich Octomore 14.2 is not your average Islay single malt. Packing a hefty 57.7% ABV and a staggering 128.9 PPM peat level, this whisky delivers an unapologetically bold and smoky experience for those who appreciate intensity with complexity.

Crafted under the expert eye of Head Distiller Adam Hannett, Octomore 14.2 stands out by marrying the rugged peat smoke that the series is famous for with the nuanced sweetness and nuttiness from a unique cask combination. The whisky spends 4 years maturing in a blend of Oloroso sherry casks (40%) and Amarone wine casks (60%) split between first and second fills, followed by an additional year in Pauillac wine casks. This innovative cask strategy pulls in rich flavors from renowned Spanish and Italian wine regions, layering the spirit with red fruit notes, dried fruits, and a touch of savory depth.

On the nose, expect an intriguing mix of leather, prunes, red currants, and malted barley, balanced by toasted oak, cinnamon, green apple, and black pepper. The smoke is dry and brooding, with hints of burnt heather and subtle pipe tobacco adding to the whisky’s character.

The palate is where the European oak influence really shines through, delivering a complex interplay of wood spices, smoked oak, roasted coffee, and a BBQ-like sweetness. Black pepper crackles alongside rich fruit cake and dried fruit notes, while a splash of water unlocks even more layers of smoke and fruity sweetness, with fresh apple and pear notes emerging to round out the dram.

Octomore 14.2 uses the same barley variety and peating level as its predecessor, the 14.1, but the wine and sherry cask maturation creates a distinct divergence that whisky lovers will appreciate for its depth and balance.

This whisky is a perfect example of Bruichladdich’s commitment to pushing boundaries on Islay, combining traditional heavy peat with innovative cask finishes to create a spirit that is both powerful and refined. Whether you’re a peat head or a fan of complex cask influence, Octomore 14.2 delivers
